Programs of Study – Overview

The University of Education Weingarten provides academic programs for those seeking to enter the teaching profession and offers a wide range of courses.

Teacher Certification Program

At the start of the 2011/12 winter semester, teacher certification parameters for the state of Baden-Württemberg were reformed. Instead of the program “Teacher Certification for Primary and Secondary Education” (“Lehramt an Grund- und Hauptschulen”) and “Teacher Certification for Vocational Secondary Education” (“Lehramt an Realschulen”), the programs now offered are “Teacher Certification for Primary Education” (“Lehramt an Grundschulen”) and “Teacher Certification for General and Vocational Secondary Education” (“Lehramt an Werkreal- , Haupt- und Realschulen.” In addition, since 2006, the University of Education Weingarten has been offering a program in “Advanced Teacher Certification for Trade School Education (Vocational Training)” (“Höheres Lehramt an Beruflichen Schulen (Gewerbelehrer)” in the subject areas of Automotive Engineering/Manufacturing Technology, Electrical Engineering/Physics, and Computer Science/Business Administration/Economics. This innovative program is run jointly with the University of Applied Sciences Ravensburg-Weingarten. The University of Applied Sciences Ravensburg-Weingarten runs the bachelor’s-degree part of this program and the University of Education Weingarten runs the master’s-degree part.

Supplementary Programs

The University of Education Weingarten also offers supplementary programs in a number of different areas for students enrolled in a teacher certification program. These programs enable students to expand their subject-specific competencies in order to be ideally prepared for their subsequent professional work.

Bachelor’s Degree Programs

Since 2007, the University has been offering innovative bachelor’s degree programs in Media and Education Management and Elementary Education. These modern and trendsetting bachelor’s degree programs provide students with the ideal preparation for their subsequent professional careers. In the 2010/11 winter semester, Exercise and Nutrition was added to the selection of programs.

In addition, since 2006, the University of Education Weingarten has offered “Advanced Teacher Certification for Trade School Education (Vocational Training)  (“Höheres Lehramt an Beruflichen Schulen (Gewerbelehrer)” in the subject areas of Automotive Engineering/Manufacturing Technology, Electrical Engineering/Physics, and Computer Science/Business Administration/Economics. This innovative program is run jointly with the University of Applied Sciences Ravensburg-Weingarten. The University of Applied Sciences Ravensburg-Weingarten runs the bachelor’s-degree part of this program and the University of Education Weingarten runs the master’s-degree part.


Master’s Degree Programs

Apart from the consecutive master’s degree courses in the areas of Media and Education Management, Educational Science, and Early Childhood Studies, the university also offers students the opportunity to pursue a master’s degree in the areas of School Development and Literacy and General Education. These master’s degree programs enable students to expand and consolidate their subject-specific academic competencies. The start of the 2013 summer semester hails the launch of the new and innovative master’s degree program in Music - Movement - Speech, which is run in cooperation with the Trossingen University of Music.

Continuing Education and Professional Training

Apart from the wide range of degrees and courses it offers, the University of Education Weingarten also provides a varied selection of continuing education and professional training programs. These are, of course, also available to external applicants and provide professional subject-specific training as well as a university certificate of completion.

Doctoral Studies

The University of Education Weingarten offers a Doctor of Education (Dr. paed. / Dr. phil.) degree. The doctorate enables junior faculty to further consolidate and enhance their skills through independent research.
